Mijenta Tequila Is A Living Map of Mexico’s Diverse Ecosystems

Mijenta Tequila

Maestra Selection No. 2 is a limited-edition tequila created by Mijenta Tequila as an exploration of terroir, celebrating the diversity of Mexico’s five legally recognized tequila-producing states: Jalisco, Guanajuato, Michoacán, Nayarit, and Tamaulipas.

Rooted in the belief that tequila, like fine wine, is profoundly shaped by place, this release examines how soil composition, climate, and elevation influence the flavor development of agave. Under the leadership of Maestra Tequilera Ana María Romero, agaves were sourced from single estates in each state, distilled separately to preserve their distinct characteristics, and then masterfully blended into a final expression that allows each region’s unique profile to shine through.

The result is a tequila of remarkable complexity, layered with aromas of caramelized coconut, vanilla, cooked agave, roasted pineapple, citrus zest, warm spices, and delicate herbal and floral notes. A living map of Mexico’s diverse ecosystems captured in liquid form.

A Design That Embodies Terroir, Culture, and Storytelling

To translate this concept into form, Mijenta collaborated with Mexico City–based artist Sophia Castellanos to create a bespoke label and gift box that visually narrate the story of each state through symbolic “spirit animals” drawn from regional folklore and cultural mythology.

Each territory is represented by an emblem rooted in local tradition:

The coyote for Guanajuato, symbolizing fire, transformation, and ancient deities of sun and energy

The hummingbird for Jalisco, embodying vitality, beauty, and spiritual joy

The butterfly for Michoacán, representing renewal, migration, and ancestral belief in spiritual messengers

The deer for Nayarit, a sacred guide in Indigenous ritual and a symbol of abundance

The Tenek deity for Tamaulipas — a half-fish, half-crocodile figure representing the mythic creation of earth and water.

These illustrations reflect both Mexico’s cultural heritage and Mijenta’s commitment to thoughtful, elevated design.

Form as Meaning: The Five-Sided Bottle

The packaging extends beyond graphics into structural storytelling. Maestra Selection No. 2 debuts in a custom five-sided recycled-glass bottle, each face representing one of the five states within the Denomination of Origin.

Rather than using shape as novelty, the form functions as narrative architecture: a physical manifestation of the terroirs that define the tequila within. When held, turned, and displayed, the bottle invites discovery from every angle, reinforcing the concept of multiple landscapes converging into a single harmonious blend.

Sustainability as Design Ethos

As with all Mijenta expressions, sustainability is embedded in every packaging decision:

Biopolymer cap made from sugar-cane fiber

Bottle crafted from recycled glass

Label produced using agave fiber

Gift box made from 100% Forest Stewardship Council–certified materials

Luxury and environmental responsibility coexist, proving that premium spirits design can be both beautiful and conscious.

A Modern Tribute to Mexico’s Diversity

Maestra Selection No. 2 is more than a limited release, it is a cultural tribute, an educational journey, and a sensory expression of Mexico’s natural richness.

By merging:
• terroir-driven production
• original commissioned artwork
• symbolic storytelling
• innovative structural design
• and sustainable materials

the project elevates tequila into the realm of collectible design objects while honoring the people, land, and traditions that shape it.
