Slice Returns As Low-Sugar, Gut-Healthy Soda With Suja Life At the Helm

For decades, soda giants Coca-Cola and PepsiCo have duked it out for lemon-lime dominance. Coca-Cola bought the “Sprite” brand name rights from a Houston-area bottler, brought in a German recruit called “Fanta Klare Zitrone,” and renamed it for the US market in 1961.

Meanwhile, Pepsi’s lemon-lime roster has undergone several changes since the 1960s, starting with Teem, later replaced by Slice in 1984, and then discontinued and replaced by a new brand, Sierra Mist (they would also introduce flavors Mandarin Orange, Apple, and Cherry Cola in 1986). Slice saw success in the 80s initially. Unlike 7UP and Sprite, it was originally made with 10% fruit juice, though the juice content was later reduced and eventually removed entirely.
