The managers of the olive-oil press in Skala, Lakonias, approached our studio with a request for premium packaging for their olive oil.

The aim was to enter premium markets in Greece and abroad.

Tools, pottery and means that progressed the quality of life are being excavated thousands of years later and continue to impress us today with the ingenuity of the technicians that created them, also considering the limited technological means available at the time.

The factory has the ability to choose the best quality olive oil in the area every season, reserve certain quantities of it and commercially distribute it in existing markets.

The fascinating ability of humans to extract raw material from the depths of the earth and their natural surroundings and to convert that into an evolutionary medium for their kind, is an instinct with a forceful trail, leading back in time.

From Europe to Africa and from the Middle East to America, the desiccated crop of the plant has been used for transferring water, storing food, creating musical instruments, or as a food preparation utensil.

A universally cultivated plant that after desiccation has been used as pottery since prehistoric times is the gourd.

The design and construction of this novel mechanical model for casting molds had to accurately represent the organic form of the gourd, which takes its shape as it grows leaning against the field.

This direct link of this utensil with the olive oil was the inspiration for the design and construction of the ceramic olive oil container “Fiala”.

Particular emphasis was given to the design of the upper part that acts as the handle. It had to be in accordance with the organic form of the lower part, it had to be ergonomic when handling and aesthetically to have futuristic details, making the overall design a coupling between modern and tradition.

In Peloponnese, it has been mainly used since antiquity as a utensil for collecting olive oil from the storage pots, as a bailer, named Fiala. A condition for this utensil to be practical was the upper part of the desiccated gourd to have a curved shape that could serve as a handle. After making a small hole in the middle on the upper part of the gourd, the inside is cleared leaving the wooden desiccated cell. Fiala is ready for use.

For the external paper packaging, we designed a custom die-cut, exclusively for the shape of the container.

It is a single paper of 360 gsm, cut with absolute symmetry on the vertical axis with a print of 1 color on the backside and a hot foil press application on the 2 sides and on the front with a mono weight illustration of olive branches. No glue is used for closing the packaging.

It is a structure with many futuristic elements, while the traditional character of the illustration with the hot foil olive branches, fits perfectly together with the brand philosophy; the coupling between modern and tradition.

The structural form of the outer packaging is in line with the shape of the ceramic container, locking together on the upper part with the aid of handles.

The biggest challenge in this project was the design of the die-cut for external packaging. The process included a lot of experimenting and iterations till the construction was a perfect  for the container and was closing perfectly. Additionally, the packaging had to close without the use of glue, and considering the total weight of 600ml of the container, the packaging should provide the necessary rigidity.

The logo of the FIALA brand was designed entirely with the aim to be best harmonized with the shape of the container and the futuracha font was used as a reference.
