SOMOS Debuts Salsa Macha

Creative Director of SOMOS, Mikaela Mendizábal and the all-female team at Common Matter designed the packaging for SOMOS, considering an upbeat, cheerful aesthetic with a perfect nod to Mexican culture. And yet, while the packaging honors a sense of Mexican pride, it thoughtfully stays away from cliched sombreros, piñatas, and Mexican flags, differentiating this brand from other salsa-centric brands.

The Salsa Macha packaging, like the rest of SOMOS’s product lineup, was designed by the Creative Director of SOMOS, Mikaela Mendizábal, and the all-female team at Common Matter based in Monterrey, MX (also the hometown of SOMOS co-founder and CEO, Miguel Leal). Common Matter is a mission-driven design agency that thoughtfully approaches value-aligned projects. The packaging is vibrant and cheerful (a nod to the Mexican spirit) with a color palette, that takes inspiration from natural Mexican pigment colors. After researching how Mexican cuisine was represented on shelves throughout American grocery stores – full of stereotypical sombreros, piñatas, and Mexican flags – SOMOS leaned into what is real.
