Student Week: Parallel Bars

Published

The brief was straightforward in Sergio Diaz’s Graphic Design Portfolio class, simply put, the assignment was to create packaging for a chocolate bar catered to gymnasts.

If nothing else, Sergio did just that. In fact, I’d argue that Sergio’s packaging is effortless in the best possible way, representative of the ease of movement that gymnasts often showcase on the various stunts and moves they pull off. Keeping the packaging black and white is thoughtful and allows the illustrations to lead the design. Each flavor is thoughtfully paired with a stunt, “Vanilla Beam,” for example, showcases a gymnast walking on a balance beam.

And no, we didn’t miss the fact that every one of the bars highlights two parallel lines at the bottom that seamlessly flow into the illustrations. Parallel Bars might be simple at first glance, but a lot of thought went into the design.
