Saving The World One Slice At A Time: Peace Pizza

by Shawn Binder on 10/09/2020 | 3 Minute Read

If only bringing peace to the world were as easy as sharing a slice of pizza. The goal of Pizza 4Ps is ambitious, if admittedly idealistic. Crafted for World Peace Day, each pizza combines unique flavors of rivaling countries, and utilizes beautiful pop-up flowers to create a sense of unity. The pop-up flowers serve as a nice reminder that there is beauty in kindness. Coupled with the alluring pizza, who knows, maybe peace over a slice wouldn't be such a bad idea in 2020.

An art project that makes your mouth water? We're in.

Re-engineering pizza boxes to make them a symbol of peace. Pizza 4Ps is a loved chain of restaurants in Vietnam that has been featured in The New York Times & BBC for their unique pizza experience. With a mission to make the world smile for peace, the brand commissioned Ki Saigon, a boutique agency in Vietnam, to bring it to life. The agency came with a novel concept to combine the flavors of countries in conflict and make them live in harmony on a pizza. The mission was: prove ingredients can be together on a pizza, and therefore so can we on the planet. Over many months, Pizza 4ps chefs Mr. Shotaro Hirukawa & Ms. Natsumi Kobayashi created three ‘Peace Pizzas’:

To bring this idea to life, the agency decided to re-engineer the Pizza 4Ps pizza box and turn it into a garden of peace. First the design team created colors and shapes, combining the colors of the flags of the mentioned countries. These colors were then transformed in 27 individual flower patterns. The flower patterns were three-dimensional and worked as a pop up. All the flowers were handmade & custom built. The pizza box itself was modified to keep the flower on the top of the box, where the flower unfolds itself and is revealed. The pizza box gives a sense of peace & tranquility, when someone enjoys the harmony of the flavors. When one opens the box a small poem for peace was written with the intent behind the project.

100% of the proceeds from the sale of the peace pizzas is to go to UN Peacebuilding Fund.

India & Pakistan, China & USA, and Israel & Palestine were the three conflicting nations Peace Pizzas tried to bring together.

The agency worked with artist Zac Beuhner & a family of local Vietnamese craftsmen and craftswomen to create an additional 250 boxes that were displayed at a one-week long celebration, where the Peace Pizzas were sold at the restaurants’ marque venue.
