I grew up in the South, so I’m no stranger to powdered drinks, which I realize sounds counterintuitive. Usually, the South is behind in pretty much every way. And yet, I grew up making sweet tea, lemonade, and Kool-Aid from the powdered packs like there was no tomorrow. 

Now, these powdery beverages are taking the mainstream market by storm, not only for sustainability measures but also for consumer convenience. With more and more brands working to decrease their use of single-use plastic bottles, powdered drinks are helping those eco-friendly efforts. These products take up drastically less shelf and shipping space, lowering the cost of shipping. And while many of these brands utilize some kind of flexible plastic packaging for the powdered drink mix, you’re still doing away with the bottle and reducing your plastic footprint—while NOT shipping water around. That’s a fairly practical solution that can help young brands lock into sustainably-minded consumers.

The beverage mixes also often have longer shelf lives, as the powdered nutrients break down slower than in a liquid. Plus, they’re super convenient for storing in a purse or lunchbox for a rainy day.
