The personal care and beauty industry is known for its elegant, innovative, and sleek packaging designs, yet, there's a darker side to the industry regarding waste. According to the Plastic Pollution Coalition, it produces more than 120 billion units of packaging annually globally.
Freshly Cosmetic's F SolidPod was designed to combat the excessive waste issue at the heart of the personal care industry. The clever application for rechargeable gel and shampoo bars was intended as an alternative to single-use packaging. The design is not only ergonomic and sleek, but extreme attention to detail went into developing the user experience.
The sustainable packaging, designed by Cul De Sac and manufactured by Monomer Tech, prevents the bars from falling apart or slipping, creating a more sanitary product that does not stick, is transportable, and is easily adjustable to a consumer's routine.
The team determined that the triangular shape was best for consumers as a circular shape created too large of a diameter to be comfortably used. The triangle helped with ease of gripping and made for easy storage. Beyond the ergonomics, the team found the triangular shape is rarely used in the cosmetics space, continuing a point of differentiation.
F SolidPod is made from recycled materials and has an estimated durability lifespan of more than ten years, thus superseding plastic bottles in the cosmetics industry and preserving weight and volume for transporting and shipping the product. In addition, once the gel or shampoo bars gets used, consumers can purchase new bars and place them in their protective packaging system.
The innovative design is rethinking the beauty industry's solid formulations and how they get packaged, emphasizing user experience and allowing consumers to transition easily to a more sustainable space without giving up ease of use or function.
