Our Long National Nightmare Is Finally Over: Taco Bell's Mexican Pizza Is Back, Baby

by Rudy Sanchez on 04/18/2022 | 3 Minute Read

To say that 2020 was a rough year is an understatement. The global pandemic upended all of our lives, tragically in too many cases. But COVID also took away many little things we always counted on, such as our beloved fast-food staples. For example, Taco Bell’s Mexican Pizza was a fan favorite and menu item for 35 years before it got the ax in the QSR brand’s pandemic menu revamp.

For months, rumors of the popular item’s return have swirled online. Recently, recording artist Doja Cat, whose serious bars in ode to Taco Bell’s Mexican Pizza garnered over 8 million views on Tik-Tok, used her Coachella debut to break the news that the ‘za is back, with Taco Bell confirming the fan-favorite will return in May.

When Taco Bell removed the menu in 2020, it acknowledged that the Mexican pizza was a fan favorite but justified removing it from the menu as part of its sustainability efforts. The brand said that the single menu item accounted for the use of 7 million pounds of cardstock. That didn’t stop fans from expressing their disappointment and asking Taco Bell to bring back the classic any-hour-of-the-day snack, including a Change.org petition with over 170,000 signatures—for whatever an online petition is worth—and American treasure Dolly Parton publicly staning for the menu item.

Images from social media indicate that the Mexican pizza will return in bespoke packaging (as designed by in-house team TBD), in a square-shaped folded box with a colorful, retro-like graphic on the top featuring the brand’s signature bell fading out against a purple background with touches of orange, red, and yellow. Behind the bell are rows of “MEXICAN PIZZA,” indicating that the packaging is intended solely for the popular menu item.

According to Taco Bell, it streamlined and better-sourced ingredients while leaving a smaller environmental footprint to return the menu item, offering no additional details other than mentioning its partnership with TerraCycle to recycle hot sauce packets.

“Our menu is full of fan favorites, but the Mexican Pizza is at the top of that list,” said Mark King, CEO of Taco Bell, in a press release. “From its flashy introduction to menus in 1985 as 'Pizzazz Pizza' to its inspiration behind the creation of infamous jingles, Mexican Pizza has a long history with the brand, and I'm glad we could give fans what they crave and bring our classic Mexican Pizza back home where it belongs.”

Mexican Pizza returns to Taco Bell on May 19, 2022, with loyalty members getting early access on the 17th.
