Over the years, we have given Starbucks an inordinate amount of shit—well-deserved shit, mind you—for its overall failure in creating a fully recyclable coffee cup. Sure, there’s a way to separate that polyethylene liner from the cup, but let’s not kid ourselves. That’s not happening on a grand scale any time soon, as there aren’t many facilities that can carry out that process.
While they still haven’t given us a paper cup that can go inside a recycling bin, we can at least applaud them for their latest cup redesign.
Announced last week, Starbucks has introduced a new cold cup that contains up to 20% less plastic than the previous cups. The cups will start rolling out in US and Canadian stores this month.
