Cannabis consumption has plenty of slang associated with it. Some terms gained wide usage, even before the days of the internet. One such word is “bogart,” which generally means to hold onto a shared joint—also a long-used slang term—longer than what would be considered polite.

The word Bogart is inspired by actor Humphrey Bogart and how he would dangle a cigarette from the corner of his mouth without taking a drag or puff on it on-screen. It was popularized by The Fraternity of Man’s song “Don’t Bogart Me” released in 1968 and used in the 1969 film Easy Rider.
