Plastic straws used to be a ubiquitous utensil that no one ever gave much thought.

But as the environmental impact of single-use plastic has gained worldwide attention, plastic straws became a focus for a lot of municipalities and companies. Many cities and companies started to ban or restrict single-use plastic straws this past year.

Plastic straw bans aren’t universally popular, and for a time they’ve been used by some right-wingers as a tool to “own the libs.” The straw bans have also caused concern in the disabled community as many folks rely on plastic straws to drink beverages.
