What if luxury could be refillable without compromise? That question inspired Aptar Beauty and Clarins to create a packaging solution that redefines what sustainable beauty looks like. For the global relaunch of Total Eye Lift, Clarins’ best-selling eye cream, the two brands introduced Aptar Beauty’s patented reloadable airless system – internally known as Gaïa – for the first time. This innovation combines technical excellence, circularity, and premium aesthetics in a way the industry has never seen before.
The Challenge
Clarins wanted more than a refillable concept; they envisioned a packaging solution that would reduce environmental impact, preserve formula integrity, and deliver an elevated user experience – all while maintaining the elegance and performance expected from a luxury skincare product. The challenge was to merge sustainability with sophistication, without compromise.

The Solution: A Reloadable Airless System
At the heart of this design is a reloadable architecture that champions circularity and convenience. The system consists of a metal casing paired with plastic reloads, both highly recyclable in PP and PE streams (for undecorated versions). Reloads can be purchased separately, reducing material use and encouraging reuse.
Two patented innovations ensure functionality and safety:
1. Push-and-Pull Reload Mechanism – Inspired by a ballpoint pen, this intuitive axial motion makes refilling effortless and satisfying.
2. Double Tamper Seal System – A two-level security feature guarantees airtight protection and prevents retro-contamination, safeguarding the formula from production to consumer use.
The airless technology delivers a precise 150 µl dose – ideal for targeted eye care – while protecting the formula against oxidation and contamination.
Design Excellence
Clarins’ version of the system is fully customized to reflect the brand’s identity and elevate the user experience:
· Premium Overshell:
A sleek, seamless red metal casing hides all technical components, creating a minimalist aesthetic that feels luxurious in hand.
· Custom Actuator & Reloads:
Matching reloads maintain visual harmony, reinforcing the premium feel even during the refill process.
This design ensures that sustainability does not compromise beauty – every detail speaks to elegance and innovation.
Impact
Clarins reports a 73% reduction in environmental impact when refilling once, compared to purchasing two full bottles. Each reload represents:

· 29% less cardboard
