The beauty industry produces more than 120 billion units of packaging every year, and most of it is plastic. But Monastery, a botanical skincare brand that hand-makes its oils in small batches, skipped plastic entirely. Designed by Creech, the system looks unearthed rather than planned.
At the center is a silver coin embossed with a classical profile, as if lifted straight from ancient Greek currency. It’s pressed into textured paper boxes in red, hot pink, lime, navy, ochre, and lilac. The balm comes in a brushed metal tube with a little coin applicator, and the gift box wears an embossed Greek key border like an old leather-bound book.
I love how confidently Creech mixes the ancient and the electric. Those colors could easily get loud, but the coin ties every box together like a currency you’d want to collect. It shows a studio that knows restraint and fun can share a shelf, which is exactly where luxury beauty is headed as shoppers move away from plastic and toward packaging they’d never throw out.
