Utah Governor Finds Condom Design Featuring State Puns No Laughing Matter

Published

Despite advances in the treatment of HIV, no viable vaccine or cure yet exists. Contrary to depictions of life with the virus in cheery pharmaceutical commercials, living with HIV is no picnic, and agencies and organizations devoted to public health aim to prevent the spread of the virus through awareness and educational campaigns, which includes promoting safer sex practices. As part of that effort, these groups distribute condoms, especially among folks more at risk for infection, such as intravenous drug users, college students, and members of the LGBTQ community.

In Utah, every three days, someone is diagnosed with HIV, something the Utah Department of Health wanted to address in their latest campaign. Rather than handout regular-old-plain-Jane condoms, the department decided to design condom wallets that are both engaging and stand a better chance of communicating their message. The condom packaging, designed by agency Love Communications, features WPA-inspired illustrations and cheeky double-entendres with Utah-specific puns, such as “SL, UT,” a reference to Salt Lake, and “Toss the Jello Salad,” a nod to the gelatin-based dessert that is a staple among Utah church potlucks.
