Graham crackers are named after Sylvester Graham, an American preacher who championed a vegetarian diet, avoiding alcohol and tobacco, sleeping on hard beds with the window open, and avoiding sexual relations. His crackers, which were initially made with coarse whole wheat flour, were unsweetened and unspiced to quell any sexual urges, which were thought to be the source of many of society’s ills.
Thankfully, graham crackers eventually evolved from tasteless whole wheat wafers to the sweeter, more flavorful version we know today, because how would we live without graham cracker crusts and s’mores? Nabisco has produced and sold graham crackers since the late 19th century and introduced Honey Maid crackers in 1925, which included honey in the recipe.
