LEGO Introduces Cardboard Boxes For In-Store ‘Pick & Build’ Wall

LEGO’s famous brick-based pieces get made using plastic, but that hasn’t stopped the brand from making strides in removing plastic from its packaging. The latest change from LEGO is a transition to cardboard boxes for its in-store “Pick & Build” wall.

While many LEGO fans purchase brand-designed kits to assemble following an instruction book, for MOC (My Own Creation) builders, the Pick & Build wall allows them to purchase selected pieces and pay according to the size bucket they fill, small or large.

Until this year, the buckets were made of plastic, and the store offered a nominal discount of 50 cents for reuse. This summer, LEGO has started phasing the plastic buckets in favor of square cardboard boxes. The boxes are initially flat, saving space, and thanks to the design, they easily fold into shape and include a lid. LEGO plans to use the plastic buckets until the supply runs out.
