Sprinkles Taps Into McBling Nostalgia with Their Playfully Mature Chocolate Design

If you’ve been, uh, around a while like me, you might remember in the late 2000s when Sprinkles was just the Los Angeles answer to the feverish, Sex and the City-inspired response to New York’s cupcake mecca Magnolia Bakery.

But while Magnolia has kept something of an old school, moneyed east coast decorum, Sprinkles has always had more of a young go-getter energy. In the ’10s, they made headlines for creating their first cupcake ATM in LA, which have not only expanded in size and location, but gotten so advanced that the machines’ loud jingles have become something of a meme. There’s no question that the sweets company has made a name for themselves, and they’ve managed to stay interesting in the process.

For their latest move, they’ve expanded their DTC line to include bags and bars of attractive chocolates. The cursive logo and colorblocked polka dots of HERE Studio‘s fun, youthful design feels like an understated take on the currently on-trend McBling aesthetic associated with other LA retail icons of the 2000s, like Kitson and Fred Segal. Black text on white packaging with literal pops of color give the final product a playful look that’s childlike, but still grown-up, perfect for capturing the joy of buying a silly, slightly expensive treat with your very own adult money.
