While many folks would consider the act of going for another bit of dip with the same chip—double dipping—gauche, on the internet, everything, including noshing decorum, is up for debate. The science behind double dipping finds that the behavior does indeed raise bacteria count in dips, though it’s unclear if that leads to a greater risk to everyone else enjoying the same dish.
Hormel, whose chili is the base for some of the most popular dippable foods, wants everyone to cool their jets on the debate with an innovative new chip designed for both camps. The new tortilla chips, made in partnership with a Minnesota-based specialty foods maker, feature a perforated row along the round dip shovel that allows it to get snapped in half for a second go at that bowl of chili.
The packaging for the novel new chip omits the name of Hormel’s partner but clearly communicates the unique feature with illustrations of pulled-apart pieces and two noodly arms holding one half in each hand. The paper bag also features a transparent window to showcase the new double-dippable chips. A clever pun, “A breakthrough in dipping technology,” is printed along the bottom of the front of the packaging.
