- Hormel Black Label Bacon has launched a portion pack with three individually perforated compartments, each holding four slices (12 total), designed to preserve freshness and reduce household food waste.
- The new portion-pack bacon packaging is currently available at major US retailers, including Walmart, Meijer, and Albertsons.
Why, by Golly, it was just yesterday that we learned one of the great packaging pet peeves had at long last been solved, with the introduction of Cheerios’ and Ziploc’s resealable PantrySeal Bag, locking in that much-needed cereal freshness and the brand’s general insistence on not putting spaces between words. Now, it looks as if one of the other great packaging headaches has been solved.
Well, at least kind of.
Hormel Black Label Bacon has unveiled its new portion pack, allegedly the first of its kind. With individual perforated sections, each “pack” holds four slices, with 12 slices total in each package. Designed to keep bacon fresh and reduce food waste, the new packaging is also intended to give consumers an easier way to prepare bacon, especially if you’re making some sweet, porky goodness for yourself or you live in a smaller household.

“Bacon has always been a food people crave, but the way people enjoy it continues to evolve,” said Aly Sill, senior brand manager for the Hormel Black Label Bacon brand, in a press release. “With Hormel Black Label Portion Pack Bacon, people can enjoy the bacon they love in a way that fits their lives. This innovative package makes it easier to enjoy bacon on their terms, whether it’s a quick breakfast, a meal for one, a weekend brunch or simply a moment worth savoring.”
While the new portion packs might not completely relieve consumers of the greasy, weird mess that is bacon packaging, there is a good argument that the individual packs will help reduce food waste, even if we’re adding more plastic to the packaging equation. Granted, most meat packaging is awful, but currently, the US leads the world in food waste, with nearly 60 million tons going to landfill each year, 43% of which comes from US households. That’s not great!
The new Hormel packs are now available at Walmart, Meijer, and Albertsons.
