Netflix has had a tough time lately, losing 200 million subscribers and taking a massive hit to its stock price. But as they say in the entertainment business, the show must go on.
In the streamer’s case, the show in question is season four of the sci-fi/horror series Stranger Things, set to debut worldwide on May 27th. In support of the hit drama, Netflix has partnered with Doritos to bring fans of 80s music, Cool Ranch, and Stanger Things for a concert event featuring artists Corey Hart, The Go-Gos, Soft Cell, and Charli XCX.
Additionally, Doritos is releasing a new, limited-time flavor, Doritos 3D Crunch Three Cheese, playing on the other dimensionality of the show. The latest offering features cheddar, Monterey Jack, and parmesan cheese in a fun 3D shape.
Live from The Upside Down takes place virtually on June 23rd. The concert is free, but tickets are only available from bags of Doritos featuring Stranger Things designs. The limited-edition packaging features creatures on the show like demogorgons; “crunch” gets flipped upside down with the front of the bag resembling a portal opening, alluding to the show.
The event has an elaborate, fictional backstory wherein a tour bus on its way to Doritos Music Fest 86' crashes near Hawkins, Indiana. The artists have been stuck in this other dimension unseen until now, with Doritos somehow having the power to open a portal to the Upside Down and organize a rock show.
“Doritos and Netflix Stranger Things are the perfect combination because we are truly taking it back to 1986 where it all started,” said Caio Correa, senior marketing director for Frito-Lay North America, via press release. “This is the year the original Doritos Cool Ranch flavor was brought to market and the year this season of Stranger Things takes place. Talk about a strange coincidence! We can't wait for our fans to join us and Netflix for this first-of-its-kind Live From The Upside Down concert.”
Tickets are only available from bags of Doritos, but concert merch, including T-shirts, is available here.
