FDA Announces Proposal For New Cigarette Packaging Rules, Includes New Warnings And Graphics Requirements

As part of a continued effort to enforce the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act, the FDA has released a set of proposed changes to tobacco packaging and advertising rules. If approved, these sweeping adjustments would be the most significant changes to cigarette labeling in more than 35 years.

The proposed reforms would require a new set of warnings, which includes lesser-known health risks associated with smoking, such as bladder cancer, erectile dysfunction and type 2 diabetes.

The warnings would also be more prominent on the cigarette pack, occupying half of the top area, accompanied by a graphic depiction of the warned malady.
