This Brazilian Panettone Box Skips Every Christmas Cliché, and It’s Better for It

Iguatemi opened Brazil’s first shopping center in São Paulo in 1966, and every holiday season it celebrates with panettone made with Pati Piva, a São Paulo artisanal confectioner.

This year, MELT Design skipped the expected ornaments and snowflakes, and the new boxes glow with a radial burst of tapered tiles that ripple out in rings like a checkered sunrise. They come in two colorways, and the tiles are embossed so you can actually feel them, almost like tactile Art Deco.

I love that this feels like Christmas without leaning on a single cliché. It’s festive enough to sit under any of Iguatemi’s 15 malls’ holiday displays, and fashion-forward enough to look like it belongs in one of its boutiques. It shows a studio that understands holiday packaging can be a gift in its own right, which is exactly what a premium panettone box should be. If anyone is looking to gift me something this holiday season, this would be a good place to start.
