The cosmetics industry, by one estimate, produced over 142 billion pieces of packaging in 2018, much of which wasn’t recyclable.

Some brands have started to take notice. Over 35% of Lush’s products are package-free, and L’Occitane, in addition to having a take-back program in-store, also sells products in refillable pouches, signing on to circular-shopping program Loop.

Now, The Body Shop is the latest cosmetic brand to implement a packaging take-back for its stores. And while it might seem like something entirely new for the beloved beauty brand, they’re reimplementing a refill program from1993.
