For International Womenâs Day, Spanish distiller Puerto de Indias sent out special bottles of its blackberry gin to bartenders, journalists, and influencers designed to bring attention to the gender pay gap in the UK.
According to the Office for National Statistics, the overall pay gap between men and women is 14.3% in the UKâwhich is precisely why Puerto de Indiaâs special bottles contain 14.3% less liquid. The company is encouraging those who received the âunfair bottleâ to post cocktails on social media using the hashtag #shakeforpayequality to bring attention to the continued wage inequality for women.
Besides containing less gin, the unfair bottles appear identical to the regular blackberry gin, just like women and men do the same jobs, even if the former makes significantly less pay.
