Collins Dictionary’s 2018 Word Of The Year Is “Single-Use”

Seeing increased interest in environmental issues, Collins Dictionary has made “single-use” the Word of the Year for 2018.

Collins’ choice for WOTY comes at the end of a year marked by a slew of regulations against single-use plastic bags, plastic utensils and straws. Companies like Starbucks have taken the initiative to remove single-use straws from their stores, and even terrorist group Al-Shabaab has banned single-use plastic bags.

“Our records show a four-fold increase in usage of this word since 2013, with news stories and the likes of the BBC’s Blue Planet II raising public awareness of this environmental issue,” Collins said in an announcement last week.
