Anointing a new color for the year is practically perfunctory if you’re in the color trends business like Pantone or Benjamin Moore. Quantifying how much a “color of the year” proclamation impacts design is certainly challenging. But, hey, at least it sparks color talk for a few days.

Paint purveyors Sherwin-Williams are no stranger to anointing an annual color of the year. But for 2024, they’re also choosing “The Loneliest Color,” looking for one of its least tinted colors that they still think merits some attention. The first of Sherwin-Williams’ Loneliest Colors is SW-6698, or “Kingdom Gold.” This version of gold is as opulent and stunning as you’d expect from a color inspired by the precious metal, but Kingdom Gold has depth and richness from vivid green undertones. The green in Kingdom Gold also gives the color a vintage feel and warmth.
