Ghost Town Oats Is Adding Poc to the Plant-Based Milk Conversation

Plant-based milk is all the rage. If it’s a nut or a grain, you can trust that someone is toiling away and turning it into an alt-milk. Soy is the OG, but other popular plant-based versions also get made from almonds, cashews, hemp, and oats. However, people of color (POC) often get left out of the plant-based food conversation. Plant-based brands don’t generally market to POC or distribute their products in communities of color, and most founders of plant-based food startups aren’t POC either.

Ignoring entire communities eating plant-based diets is leaving money on the table. According to research by Pew, Black Americans are three times more likely to adopt a plant-based diet than the overall population. The study also found that 8% of Black folks in America self-identify as vegan versus 3% of all Americans.
