For astronauts aboard the International Space Station (ISS), there’s no 2-day Amazon Prime. If they need something, they have to wait until a delivery arrives via rocket ship. While resupply missions are commonplace for the ISS, as humankind pushes farther towards deep space travel, resupply missions will become more difficult, and those traversing the galaxy will have to find ways to efficiently use the limited supplies they’ll be able to carry aboard with them.
With that in mind, NASA is now testing a new combination recycler/3D printer which allows astronauts aboard the ISS to print supplies on-demand using recycled materials. Dubbed the “Refabricator” and designed by Tethers Unlimited, Inc., this machine is about the size of a dorm fridge.
Currently, there are several challenges with using recycled materials in 3D printing as it’s not only labor intensive, but the filament made from recycled material is of a lower grade than virgin plastic. Additionally, the filaments have a weakened molecular structure, and there are contamination issues.
