Ex-Squeeze Me, Did Graza Just Go Glass?

Published

Since Graza launched in 2022, the CPG world has become enamored with squeeze bottles. Popularized by chefs who were already using squeezable containers in the back of the house for various sauces and liquids, Graza has inspired a host of other brands to give consumers the gift of compression-adjacent condiments.

Unfortunately, this also paved the way for more start-up brands to cash in on our insatiable desire to wring out a dollop of sauce by using plastic bottles. However, one could make an argument that Graza was a quietly sustainable story, as their containers often took on a second life. Realizing that many people were saving their empty Graza bottles for lesser olive oils, they wisely started offering refills in beer cans.

Now, Graza wants to give consumers yet another option for sizzling and drizzling—glass.

Releasing today, Graza will now offer its Sizzle and Drizzle oils in glass bottles. There’s no new look or feel, just a sturdy vessel that can be used again and again, minus the squeeze. The fully opaque, UV-blocking painted coating on the glass helps shield the oil from any light exposure and helps preserve freshness. Additionally, the new bottles will feature a built-in pop-up spout that allows for easy pouring (the spout can also be removed and replaced when empty, making for a recyclable and refillable vessel).

So, why glass now?

Well, for starters, it’s about giving folks more choice. However, perhaps the most significant reason is that you should never package olive oil in plastic. If it’s not in an airtight bottle, your oil can go rancid, and your best bet at protecting all of that liquid gold from other factors like heat and light is to package it in dark glass. And that’s exactly what the company was addressing.

“Since we first came to market with the OG squeeze bottle, there has been clear feedback from some people who simply prefer their Extra Virgin Olive Oil in glass,” said co-founder and CEO Andrew Benin. “We want our high-quality olive oil to reach as many people as we can, so it was important for us to meet consumers where they are by offering an alternative form factor in their preferred packaging.”

To create an airtight seal, the brand added a divet into the bottle cap where the pop-up spout can rest. And, as I used some of the Sizzle oil while making pasta last night, I can confirm that it does, in fact, make an immensely satisfying pop when you open the bottle. That’s worth the cost of entry alone.

Graza’s new glass bottles are available at Kroger and Whole Foods starting today. And while you can still very much purchase the squeeze bottles, I can promise you that you won’t miss them.
