UK McDonald’s Have Paper Straws And Customers Are Not Lovin’ It

Fast Food behemoth McDonald’s has started rolling out paper straws, a more sustainable alternative to single-use plastic straws, in the UK and thousands of Britons aren’t exactly welcoming the change with open arms.

As of this writing, over 40,000 people signed a petition to bring back the plastic straw, with one intrepid complainer even looking to cash in on “straw rage” by selling them at $10 a pop on eBay.

Why’s the campaign important? According to the petition author Martin Reed, “So I can drink my milkshake proper.” 38 Degrees, the online petition platform, isn’t on-board with the calls for a return to plastic straws, adding a small blurb to Reed’s appeal saying “this petition has been started by a member of the public and not 38 Degrees. Single-use, ‘throw-away’ plastic items like straws, cups and bottles have a huge impact on our environment, they clog up our oceans, and pollute our countryside.”
