Couch Potato’s Design Is Anything But Lazy

  • Couch Potato is a new brand of potato chips from the Joe Tea Company.
  • Rather than working with advertising and design agencies, Joe Tea created the brand identity and packaging entirely in-house.

Although it was first commercially sold in 1928, it wouldn’t be until the 70s that nearly every household in America had at least one television set, and we’ve been binging ever since. In 1976, artist Tom Iacino would coin the term “couch potato,” and cartoonist friend Robert Armstrong used it in his work.

The term “couch potato” typically refers to a person lazily sitting or lying on a sofa in front of a television, though these days the TV could be swapped for a smartphone and reruns of Friends on TikTok. The sentiment behind the phrase, however, remains the same: to describe a person idly lounging in front of a screen.
