J.R. Liggett has been making eco-friendly, non-GMO, vegan shampoo products since before any of those were buzz words. And when I say “shampoo products” I really mean shampoo bars! Shampoo in the form of a bar of soap – you can simply rub it on your head, lather it up and rinse. When the day came for the shampoo bars to get a packaging redesign, the North Carolinian team at Device Creative Collaborative took on the task. A design team that couldn’t have been more of a perfect match for the project, known for their ability to create intricate, typographic work with a vintage air and a strong personality shining through.

The artwork is decorative, yet light, with soft embellishments intertwining throughout the well set typography. And what beautiful typography it is. A mixture of cursive script combined with a sturdy, condensed font boldly spelling out “SHAMPOO.” Obviously you don’t want any consumers passing by and mistakenly thinking this is just another bar of soap.

"Cursive script and decorative borders attest the products embodiment of the old saying – that if it ain’t broke, it don’t need fixing.”

The restrained color palette being used on the packaging is a lovely balance to the high level of detail put into the other areas of the artwork. Essentially a black and white palette with the sparing use of one accent color per bar in order to differentiate the shampoo types/scents.

“Minimal color elements highlight the equally minimal ingredient list.”Device Creative Collaborative have truely embodied the spirit of the brand in their design solution for the J.R. Liggett’s shampoo bar packaging. Written on the product labels are the words “Old Fashioned Bar” and “Beautiful” – adjectives that can be used to describe the design work itself. Beautiful work from Device Creative Collaborative, I look forward to seeing what your team creates next.
