In recent years, refillable packaging has really stepped up its game. It’s a trend we were excited to include in our 2023 Trend Report, and this year alone, we’ve seen plenty of brands go the way of the refill (Wild, Peak State Coffee, Dr. Bronner’s, PATH Water, Maya, and many, many more).
But designing a pack that can be used again and again means more than simply selecting a sturdy material and calling it a day. To dive into the world of refillable packages and how to design them effectively, we sat down with Oslo-based design agency Goods, and they shared their expertise with sustainable pack options.
Goods has done extensive work in the sustainable packaging space—not only for their clients but also by establishing the Goods Index, a resource for those striving to design more sustainably. Goods recently created a project for themselves to shed some light on the process of designing refillable packs and highlighting the possibilities designers and brands can explore. They decided to go with hand cream, an everyday item folks might have in their bags, at their desks, or in a toiletries kit.
