PepsiCo has announced that it will replace plastic rings used on multipacks with paperboard alternatives in Canada and the United States. The beverage multinational firm said it will roll out the new packaging in phases across different regions of the US beginning later this year, with the Canada rollout underway.
The new paperboard replacement includes clips and wrap designs that are recyclable, user and shelf-friendly. PepsiCo will roll out the change across its portfolio of popular brands, including Pepsi, Starry, Gatorade, and MTN DEW. PepsiCo will also swap out the plastic rings for paperboard with the 7UP brand in Canada, as they have distribution rights outside the US.
Replacing plastic rings with paperboard is part of PepsiCo’s efforts to reduce the amount of virgin plastic from nonrenewable sources by half per serving sold by 2030. This plastic reduction target is part of PepsiCo’s overall ESG (Environmental, Social, and Corporate Governance) program called pep+ (PepsiCo Positive). Other packaging-related goals include selling 20% of beverage servings via a reusable packaging model and reducing the absolute tonnage of nonrenewable virgin plastic used by 20%.
