Located 100 miles from New York City, the Hudson Canyon is the largest underwater canyon on the East Coast. Up to 2.5 miles deep and 7 miles wide, it’s comparable in size to the Grand Canyon. It’s home to 10% of the world’s Right Whales, sea turtles, and scores of other sea life, including fish and shellfish consumed in NYC and beyond.
Currently, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is considering a government proposal to designate the Hudson Canyon as a marine sanctuary, which would permanently protect the canyon and its marine life from offshore drilling and increase research into the ecosystem.
