The Very Hungry Apple chocolate box

Kakuichi Yokocho and marco chocolaterie (Hiroshima) asked me to create a chocolate box for Valentine Day 2020. As the chocolates had the shape of a caterpillar and a ladybird, I was immediately inspired by my favorite childhood book: The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle! And that’s how the idea to create a book-shaped box with an apple inside, and the caterpillar coming out from it. My initial idea was to make a small window in the cover of the book, so the head of the caterpillar comes out from the apple on the cover, but the packaging would have been too expensive. For the back cover, I created a marbled paper motif, using the colors of the apple. The Very Hungry Caterpillar is still very popular in Japan where it’s called Hara peko aomushi. Paper marbling methods (that I produced digitally here) has been used since the 7th century and is known in Japan as suminagashi. The chocolate boxes have been sold out in a few days only!
