When it comes to world-building, brands quickly rushed into the metaverse. But there’s nothing like old-school world-building through conventional media and brand components like signage, advertisements, and packaging.

McDonald’s Canada’s latest promotion drops customers into an anime universe inspired by McDonald’s decades-long stand-in “WcDonald’s.” WcDonald’s first debuted in the anime and manga series Cat’s Eye in 1981 and has since appeared in other series as well.

McDonald’s anime promotion will feature four episodic shorts by animation house Studio Pierrot, covering four popular genres of anime—action, romance, mecha, and fantasy. Additionally, McDonald’s McChicken box, soda cup, and fry box get the anime treatment. McDonald’s also created a manga takeout bag featuring the “WcDonald’s Crew” designed by illustrator Acky Bright. Finally, a specially made savory chili dipping sauce is also part of the WcDonald’s promotion, complete with the upside down "M" and a fancy golden sheen.

“I had a great time partnering with McDonald's to help make WcDonald's a reality for manga fans who genuinely love the brand," Acky Bright said in a press release. “From the details of the diverse Crew characters to the manga plot itself, I loved using my artwork to bring to life the dynamic, vibrant world of WcDonald's for people worldwide.”

WcDonald’s launches in Canada on February 27th.
