Tamales are Meso-American dishes made with nixtamalized corn dough filled with various ingredients and then wrapped and steamed. It also makes for a practical meal; the banana or corn husk wrapper protects the tamal, and it is a dense, filling meal stuffed with different meats, vegetables, cheeses, and sauces. They are also easy to eat on the go, either handheld and utensil-free or sitting down and using the wrapper as a plate.

Fillo’s is a brand of shelf-stable, modern, Latin foodstuffs inspired by founders Daniel and Antonio Caballero’s father, the brand’s namesake. Fillo’s started with pouches of protein-packed sofrito, which proved to be a hit with customers, and their success inspired the brand to brainstorm new product ideas, landing on the versatile tamal. Fillo’s then went to work on creating clean-label, shelf-stable, non-GMO versions of its “Walking Tamales” in traditional, contemporary, savory, and sweet flavors such as Bean Salsa Verde, Bean Salsa Roja, Strawberry Coconut, Peanut Piloncillo, and Chocolate Almond.

The packaging design from Loggia for Fillo’s walking tamales is playful and fun. The pouches feature a cartoon walking tamal dressed up in outfits for different outdoor activities like rock climbing, snorkeling, and cycling. Typography has the same whimsical character of the cartoon tamal and sturt that perfectly embodies the spirit of the rest of the packaging. Each flavor tamal has a simple yet effective two-color palette and a heat scale using a series of 1-5 peppers that's easy to understand.

Walking tamales are available now from Fillos.com.
