Broc Cellars' Packaging Highlights The Winery's Organic Originality

by Chloe Gordon on 07/13/2022 | 3 Minute Read

California-based urban winery Broc Cellars is known for its innate creativity in creating organic wines. The inventiveness doesn't stop in the winemaking, however, and beautifully flows into the packaging design. The delicate labels are hand drawn by Marta Elise Johansen, a collaboration between Marta and Broc Cellars. The packaging is simple and approachable while also effortlessly highlighting the brand's originality.

Broc Cellars is an urban winery in Berkeley, CA, winemaker and owner, Chris Brockway is known for his creativity and restraint in making super crushable, approachable wines in a natural way. He creates all of the wines using spontaneous fermentation, with only the native yeasts and bacteria that exist on the grapes and has continued to grow his winemaking style as this popular market has expanded.

As the natural wine market has evolved, Broc Cellars has worked with their vineyards to ensure that 100% of their grapes are grown without synthetic pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, or fertilizers. They don't add anything to the wines - nutrients, yeast, bacteria, enzymes, tannins or other popular fermentation agents.

The Love Sparkling made its debut as part of the 2020 Love lineup, and now for the first time ever, the 2021 Love Sparkling will also be available in can format. Made with Chenin Blanc from Shell Creek Vineyard in Paso Robles and a touch of Muscat from North Canyon Vineyard in Santa Maria Valley, the new addition of Muscat in this vintage brings out extra dimension, a lift on the nose, and complexity on the palate. Love Sparkling grapes were picked early in the morning and the juice was left on the skins until the afternoon, when it was pressed into stainless steel tanks.

The wine was fermented until dry, then Chardonnay must was added to sweeten the wine and the juice was bottled. As it warmed up, fermentation occurred again in bottle, providing the gorgeous bubbles, and the wine was disgorged by hand with no dosage. This sparkling natural wine is both approachable and delicious – with a delicate fizz that carries aromas and flavors of lemon and pineapple on the nose, while crisp green apple, lime zest & lemon linger on the palate.
