Metsa Board's 'Better With Less' Design Challenge Returns For Third Year

The Better with Less Challenge has opened submissions for its third iteration of the competition, sponsored by Metsä Board. The Better with Less Challenge aims to inspire packaging designers worldwide to create solutions that have a minimal environmental impact.

This year’s challenge includes three categories, Zero Waste Convenience, Zero Waste Experience, and a wild card that creates a zero-waste and circular packaging solution that doesn’t fit the other main categories. 

For the convenience category, the challenge asks designers to consider delivery services, e-commerce, and food take-out, seeking designs that improve convenience while contributing less to packaging waste, facilitating recycling, and providing a vision of delivery service with circular and sustainable packaging. The zero-waste experience category is packaging solutions that don’t compromise functionality and aesthetics while delivering on sustainability problems, focusing on electronics, wellness and beauty, fashion, and food products.

This year's panel of esteemed jurors for the Better with Less Challenge includes Brandi Parker, head of sustainability, Pearlfisher; Brian Collins, chief creative officer, Collins; Carin Blidholm Svensson, creative director and founder, BVD; Jennifer Patrick, global packaging and brand director, Patagonia; Sian Sutherland, co-founder, A Plastic Planet; Ilkka Harju, packaging services director, Metsä Board; and Dieline founder and editor-in-chief Andrew Gibbs.

The top prize for the winner includes a €10,000 award, and you can find the full brief here. The entry round closes December 1st, 2022, so you have a few months to procrastinate, but you shouldn’t, of course.
