Squealing Pig Celebrates Mardi Gras With LGBTQIA+ Labels

Squealing Pig is a casual, laid-back wine brand from New Zealand with bottle labels that feature fun and relatable copy inspired by nursery rhymes. As a sponsor of Sydney’s Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras, the wine brand decided to change up its label with new verses inspired by the LGBTQIA+ community as a way to celebrate diversity and inclusion.

Each Squealing pig label, designed with agency Wunderman Thompson, is inspired by LGBTQIA+ experiences and carries one of nine flags—bisexual, gay, pansexual, asexual, pride, non-binary, transgender, intersex, and lesbian. The copy on each bottle corresponds to the flag on the label. For example, the pride flag label reads, “this little pig went to Mardi Gras/flew the pride flag/partied together into the night/because love is love/and cos they love a party.” The screwtops are also rainbow-striped but don’t follow a specific flag, and as part of the “fly with pride” theme, pigs are given heart-shaped wings on the label.

“From celebrating the diversity of people that a pan-sexual person is free to love to someone who found their true self through transitioning, Squealing Pig Pride Labels are a toast to the many colorful spectrums of love, sexual orientation, and gender identity that live among us,” said Fernanda Lopes, Squealing Pig senior brand manager, in a press release.

The Squealing Pig LGBTQIA+ labels were sold in Mardi Gras supporting venues in Sydney, which ran from February 18th through March 6th, 2022.
