According to a survey by food delivery firm Instacart, 74% of consumers say they enjoy food with hot sauce, and almost half, 45%, enjoy adding a dash of hot stuff to their food at least once a week. Americans are into spicy foods, and with a strong resolve to not be out-pizza’d, Yum! Brands’ Pizza Hut has announced a trio of amped-up pies called Spicy Lover’s.
Available in Spicy Double Pepperoni (which includes classic and crispy-cupped pepperonis), a Spicy Hawaiian Chicken, and Spicy Veggie, all three pizzas feature a spicier marinara sauce, sliced red chilis, and a mix of herbs and crushed chili pepper flakes the Hut calls Fiery Flakes.
The limited-time offering also comes in new pizza boxes. A slice adorned with spicy ingredients like sliced chilis and pepperoni dominates the top of the box, accompanied by a whole pepper to one side and the flaming Spicy Lover’s logo, which cleverly replaces the apostrophe with a little pepper. The packaging also keeps in line with Pizza Hut’s newstalgic brand strategy.
“Pizza Hut has been making iconic pizzas for generations, and that requires adapting for each new wave of pizza lovers,” said Georgeanne Erickson, chief brand officer, Pizza Hut, in a press release. “As consumer tastes continue getting more adventurous, the launch of Spicy Lover’s Pizza allows Pizza Hut to satisfy the growing craving for a well-balanced, spicy flavor. No other national pizza chain is offering spicy pizza in the space, and we’re excited to bring this thoughtfully crafted spicy pizza to pizza lovers across the country!”
