The Solution / Project Description

Description: Nikasi is aimed to be a ground-breaking brand of white beer. In the fierce competition of the brewery market, the two-dimension effort put into labels is no longer functioning as well as before. We have no intention of making a better label or a more delicate illustration. What we try to achieve is a three-dimension change so as to resist homogenization in the beer market. The three-dimension relief on the glass neck is thus carved to depict the Sumerian goddess of the brewery, Ninkasi, which inspired the name of the product, Nikasi. Nikasi is believed to be the guardian of beer and beer-makers in the early dynastic period. The shape of the bottle is made to express the originality and the authentic flavor of the beer. The extremely exquisite label is designed to work as the gown of the goddess. With all these details matching the theme of Nikasi, consumers are proud to hold the bottle in hand and a sense of leading superiority can be touched on social occasions. The perfection of the embossed face will therefore secure a high-quality impression on consumers and then enlarge the gap with competitors profoundly. As the designer, we are on the same page with the brand owner that a game-changing product is worth time and patience. Here it is, Nikasi of Tsingtao Beer.

Brief: In the fierce competition of the brewery market, the two-dimension effort put into labels is no longer functioning as well as before. We have no intention of making a better label or a more delicate illustration. We are trying to achieve the three-dimension change to resist homogenization in the beer market.

Design Solution: The inspiration comes from the myth that Ninkasi is said to be the first goddess of the brewery in human history. While most of the beers differentiate themselves from their competitors by labels. We made this bold decision to carve the neck of the bottle, telling a mysterious story of the origin of the beer at the same time.

Materials:Bottle: GlassLabel: Back stick paperAs we know, the thickness of a beer bottle is quite limited. The carving of the bottle is not at all an easy process. Also, the sharp angles on the face have made it even more difficult for manufacturers to produce it by mass. Yet through over 30 times of proofing and redesigns of the 3D modeling work, the beer is now qualified for mass production.

Manufacture? The cost of mass production sales is RMB 8 and the sales selling price is RMB 18.

Cultural Context? Nikasi is one of the oldest and most widespread of the Sumerian deities, having been used as a symbol of beer and the patron of its brewing industry from the Early Dynastic Period (2900-2350 BC). In the hymns of the time, she was celebrated as the "Satisfier of Desires". The Ninkasi Hymn is one of only two Sumerian toasts in existence today.

Sustainability? The beer bottles produced for sale can be recycled after the sale and, after cleaning and sterilization, can be relabelled for purchase. The recycling process is repeated up to fifteen times in order to reduce the pressure on the ecological environment.
