It’s customary to set resolutions for a new year, with many folks setting goals to improve some aspect of themselves. Fashion brand Chanel appears to have “be more sustainable” on its list of resolutions for 2022, announcing No. 1, a new beauty line with formulations and packaging that Chanel calls “eco-responsible,” and features several sustainability-focused improvements.

No. 1 is focused on anti-aging and sustainability, primarily using ingredients derived from the red camellia. Formulations are up to 97% naturally derived, and the range of nine products includes serums, foundations, mists, cleansers, balms, and lotions.

The cream lids get made with 90% bio-based materials, a tenth of which comes from camellias. The glass bottles are lightened by a third to half, according to British Vogue. No. 1 revitalizing cream jars are also refillable, reducing waste. Additionally, the packaging is void of cellophane wrap and paper inserts, the latter replaced with a QR code printed on the box. Organic inks used on the packaging require less heat and thus less fuel.

Chanel No. 1 follows last year’s Eau de Chanel debut. The new eponymous fragrance line features a 91% bio-based cap developed with Finnish materials firm Sulapac. Both No. 1 and Eau de Chanel are available now.
