Student Week: Dijiao: Bamboo Aged Spirits

Inspired by the villagers in China who use bamboo shoots to age their spirits, designer Spike C Clarke created the conceptual brand Dijiao that represents this rich history. The bottle of the spirit itself is beautifully minimal with an airy font and a slight pop of red through the wax seal, but the real magic lies in the beauty of the bamboo carrier. Uniquely original, this bamboo case is elegant and organic and beautifully displays the culture's history and practices. Imagine this on a shelf at the highest level liquor store, and it would instantly draw your eye. Stunning.
Dijiao is a small batch luxury spirit brand. The packaging celebrates the rare spirit-making tradition in Eastern-Asia with a design that uses up-cycled bamboo trunks to tell a story of the journey from harvest to distillation.
Backstory: In the absence of an oak barrel, Chen Chao uses live bamboo trunks to age his spirit, a method reputed to confer a unique aroma. The spirit is introduced into bamboo trunks via high-pressure injection techniques, where it will mature with the bamboo and mingle with the sap released from the trunk.
Chen wanders through the south-eastern mountains of China to his 'celler' (dijiao) where he will check on his prized blends. From start to finish the bamboo serves the purpose of ageing the spirit before being up-cycled into casing to create a fully sustainable small batch luxury spirit.
