Jaz Baker designed Oracle and Valour, two wine varieties, for a class project that explored the design of wine labels. Understanding that the labels have to represent the flavors and notes within the bottle, she set out to create two wine labels with different narratives. These two wines include Oracle, a bottle of red wine with an aging taste featuring dark and layered design elements, and Valour, a rosé featuring an uplifting, sweet, and quirky label. The designs ultimately showcase the notes within the bottle in a subtle yet easily recognizable way. A job well done.
This assignment involved creating and experimenting with liquor labels. Working with different varieties of wine, the bottle should strongly represent the liquid inside, and create a narrative that the wine can identify with. This brief also required that the first letter of the wine name be involved in the label. Oracle: Inspired by the aging time of the wine, the liqueur muscat’s identity revolves around an equally agued figure, that being an Oracle; both aged and wise, many would seek them out, regardless of the consequences (in this situation, a hangover). Developed from research, this strategy takes an older figure, and presents them in a new light – almost creating a ‘Neo-Oracle’. The Oracle’s aged aesthetic has been juxtaposed through glow-in-the-dark ink and screen printing, where their powers show under the cover of dark. The overlayed hands creates an O, which is emphasised through the shape of the eye.
Valour: With Verdelho being a wine variety with a fast aging process, a concept was built around the idea of Valour and its original use during the medieval period – Brave knights and adventurous individuals. Valour’s unique aesthetic comes from fusing medieval illustrations with a contemporary colour scheme and method (block colour overlays) to create a quirky brand tone, and creates the shape of a V through the wings of a harpy, a medieval fabled beast that stories would revolve around.
