Student Week:The Ductor COVID 19 Safety Kit

Matthew Darwish, a student at Rafik Hariri University, created the ultimate COVID-19 prevention kit as part of his Packaging Design class with professor Serene Srouji. The front of the kit's packaging features playful illustrations reminiscent of bacteria found when looking through a microscope. The plague doctor mascot could be intimidating, but keeping the illustration on the smaller side helps make the logo feel less threatening and more accommodating. Overall, Matthew's design is sleek and concise, just as a medical kit should be.

The COVID 19 pandemic has altered our lives substantially, and even after almost 2 years, the world still lacks a fully optimal COVID-19 safety kit. Therefore, I decided to create the first ultimate COVID-19 prevention kit – The Ductor, which contains: a disposable set of Nitrile gloves, hand sanitizer and alcoholic spray, a 100% cloth hypoallergenic face masks, keychain mask holder crafted in aluminum and disinfectant wipes. "Ductor" is a clever accent play on how Lebanese people pronounce “Doctor” since this product is locally made. Visually, I created a mascot illustration of an old-fashioned plague doctor.

To represent the brand due to the similarities between this pandemic and the Plague of the 1300s. I added a red tarboosh for the mascot to further signify that this product is made in Lebanon and a green safety mask stretched over his plague mask to stress the importance of safety. The background is an outline pattern of viruses and bacteria. On the side, I created infographic awareness visuals explaining the wrong ways of wearing a mask due to the recent actions of the Lebanese people. The colors used are black and white to show contrast and to reflect a medical feel. The red and green colors integrated into the logo and in the design resemble the colors of the Lebanese flag. Structurally, the Packaging is an eco-friendly cardboard box made from biodegradable material. The inside boxes are also recyclable and reusable. The whole design is eco-friendly, minimalistic, well-crafted, and visually appealing to stand out on the shelf and reduce our carbon foot print.
