How does a brand balance the challenging act of appearing approachable and playful while still maintaining a sophisticated homage? Sasso & Co and Will Bryant have done just that for The WhistlePig Barrel-Aged Lo-Ball. This limited-edition project resulted in a matte off-white label featuring illustrations of the barrels involved in making the drink and a gold foil emblem as a nod to the gold foil accents used in the Whistle Pig labels.

The WhistlePig Barrel Aged Lo-Ball was born and raised in Vermont. When we wanted to do a limited-edition barrel project, it only seemed natural to reach out to our neighbors.

WhistlePig was nice enough to roll over a couple of their Vermont white oak barrels, used to age their FarmStock whiskey at their distillery down the road. The resulting Lo-Ball is easygoing at just 4.8% alc/vol. with fresh apple flavor complimented by the dry, spicy character you would expect from rye barrels (or from a Vermonter).

The challenge on the design side was create a label that was lighthearted as someone would expect from the lo-ball line, while toeing the line on the sophisticated branding of WhistlePig. We ended up designing an off white matte finished label and as a nod to WhistlePig who uses a gold foil accents on their bottles we chose a label that gave us the ability to utilize a gold metallic layer. The barrels designed by Will Bryant are keeping with the mascot theme of the lo-ball series while the tax stamp Bart designed for the side panel was another nod to WhistlePig.
