ArtCenter Students Redesign Method To Be Completely Plastic-Free
by Jessica Deseo on 05/18/2021 | 10 Minute Read
For the Spring 2021 Packaging 2 class, we tasked ArtCenter College of Design students with reinventing the iconic home brand Method.
Everyone knows Method and its naturally-derived, biodegradable, non-toxic household and personal care items. But folks also recognize the brand for its iconic bottle that incorporates a refillable system—one of the first commercially available products of its kind.
Students were to reimagine the beloved brand and take it a step further by creating packaging concepts that are 100% plastic-free.

Concept: Skincare is something that should be personal, relaxing, and simple—a way for you to take time for yourself during the day. Drawing inspiration from the calm of dawn and the faceted beauty of growing light, Beam makes it easy and straightforward for anyone interested in skincare by providing an adaptive, streamlined routine that takes the stress off of you and your skin. In addition, sustainable materials get utilized to support the environment.

Concept : The Mystery of the Ocean
This is a plastic-free laundry product inspired by ocean creatures. Nowadays, there are 300 million tons of plastics dumped into the ocean each year. Sealife often regards those plastics as jellyfish and will even mistake them for food. There are thousands of marine creatures who lost their lives because of this. Our product will use natural ingredients and recyclable packaging materials. We hope to provide a safe, efficient, and convenient user experience for customers and a clean, healthy living environment for marine life.

Concept: METHOD SEXUAL WELLNESS: MOVEMENT OF HUMAN FORM
Investing in sexual wellness can be extremely intimidating, leading many companies to frame their packaging around masking the fact. That can remove all emotive qualities from the packaging and product, the power to, itself, arouse and enhance the sexual experience of the users. Sex is beautiful and intrinsic. It is a dance between two and an artistic view of the human body.
Instead of shielding and hiding, this concept incorporates the human form in the packaging of products designed for it. This is a celebration of the natural human figure during movement, its lines that refuse to conform, and colors that blush from excitement.

Concept: Periods are a natural thing, just like eating and sleeping. However, many women hesitate to talk about it because of its stigma and taboo. That hinders many women from learning proper knowledge of their bodies despite their importance, which eventually leads to using toxic products. It’s essential to be conscious about our body for our well-being.

Concept: Method lab provides self-experimentation and a personal experience to curious customers with naturally derived cosmetic products, helping them feel safe and explorative while creating more possibilities for different unique styles.
Student: Josiah Tersieff
Method and North Face will collaborate to produce a line of functional, compact, and sustainable personal care products for use in rugged conditions while backpacking. Good equipment makes time in the backcountry all the more enjoyable.
It’s not about the product; it’s about the experience. So let us get it out of your way.

Zero is a unisex plastic-free personal care product line of method. Inspired by the ocean, zero wants to save our environment and marine populations while achieving zero pollution and zero waste.
Loop system packaging reduces ocean waste through reusable, sustainable materials for environmentally conscious individuals that want to get quality body care and save the planet at the same time, all with elegant, minimal design.

By using elements and themes like pearls, mermaids, and glowing water, I created a fantasy world for my method project.
The concept name “Afterglow” can be described as the relaxed and fresh feeling of the experience of floating in water. It also creates a new lifestyle that speaks about protecting the ocean, as well as our planet.
